When It Was Quiet (EP) - mUmbo

indie-folk / dream-pop / cinematic / atmospheric

The songs on When It Was Quiet share a common thread of observation — seeing the world from a slight distance, as if from the outside looking in. Each piece unfolds as a poetic vignette, capturing fleeting moments of perception rather than narrative or confession. Though shaped by a slightly dissociative perspective, the music remains strongly emotive — reflective, cinematic, and intimate.

When It Was Quiet - EP tracklist

  • You Can Do What You Want To - indie cinematic / narrative / wistful
  • You Know The Song - intimate / impressionistic / melancholic
  • Worm Moon - cinematic / nocturnal haze / ambient

Press Quotes

'The opening track 'You Can Do What You Want To' lands like the first scene of an indie film you instantly fall in love with. Semple’s voice is rich with storytelling clarity, and MacGowan’s guitar carves space around her like a frame around a portrait' - Flex Music Blog

‘mUmbo is a quintessentially English, dreamfolk take on what made Mazzy Star so enchanting ’ -  Dave Franklin, The Big-Takeover

‘The three tracks create a narrative, soulful, and dreamy atmosphere ….. the slightly hazy textures, the lovely melodies, and the subtly melancholic approach make this a true indie gem that touches the heart and gets under your skin.’ - Berlin On Air

‘The group’s shared love for mood-driven artistry shines through immediately. You can sense the echoes of Cocteau Twins’ otherworldliness, the dusky melancholy of Mazzy Star, the tactile guitar work of Johnny Marr and Ry Cooder, but mUmbo filter these influences through their own lens, prioritising atmosphere over imitation.’ - Chris Bound, Mystic Sons

'If you love music that takes you on a journey, that invites reflection, and that creates unforgettable atmospheres, this is the EP you've been waiting for. An unmissable experience for those seeking depth, beauty, and a touch of magic in the contemporary music scene.' - Frequenze Musicali

Bio

mUmbo is a UK/Italy trio featuring Doug MacGowan – electric and acoustic guitars, bass; Emma Semple – vocals, viola and violin; and Antonio Dalé – drums and percussion. They met through collaborating on other music projects. Each of them comes from a different musical background, but they share a love of working outside the box and exploring new musical possibilities. That mix of influences has shaped the EP When It Was Quiet where the combination of guitar, strings, voice and percussion creates a sound that shifts between intimate warmth, and spacious cinematic atmosphere.
